THE SPRING 2010 COLLECTION The pavement’s cracked in this part of town. Water leaks from a hydrant, eddying in greasy pools. Broken glass collects in a gutter. But raise your eyes: Over the barbed wire, visible through the blackening fence, there are flowers. The color is brazen - fuchsias and yellows deepened by the dew quivering on soft petals. So much beauty, just out of reach. This season, CHRISTIAN COTA takes inspiration from the urban garden. Beauty in bloom, vivid and vulnerable, chained up against trespass. It’s there in the deconstructed floral prints emphasized for Spring ’10, and given a fresh daywear spin. And it’s evident, too, in the mood conjured by this collection’s marriage of references: Fifties hourglass femme meets late eighties tough/early nineties grunge. Says Christian Cota: “I was imagining this woman, so beautiful she almost seems fragile, surrounded by all this hardness. It’s like she’s caged, like she’s put up a fence around her own fragility.” The thing about a cage, though, is it reveals more than it obscures. And Cota’s Spring ’10 girl is no shrinking violet, to be sure - not when she’s clad in a palette of fuchsia, yellow, teal and electric blue, and not when she’s roaming the beach in one of the designer’s knit bathing suits, a new category this season. Indeed, with a new focus on day looks, CHRISTIAN COTA is stepping into the sunshine. Soft, draped suiting. Distressed silk cotton shirting. Laser cut chiffon. New categories all, seamlessly integrated into the signature CHRISTIAN COTA twisted-polish aesthetic. “I really felt like this was the moment to expand my horizons,” says Cota. “I design for a girl who has a full schedule, and varied interests, and I want my clothes to work for all parts of her life. For me, the question was, how I do I make day pieces that are just as special as what my client wears out at night?
